HI THERE, I’M

MONA BRANDT

I’m an award-winning game designer, visual designer, consultant and mentor with more than ten years of experience across game development, cultural projects and games with purpose.

Today, I work with game teams and organizations at different stages of development – from figuring out what makes an idea worth pursuing to shaping the experience that eventually reaches players.

MY APPROACH

GOOD DESIGN GOES
BEYOND GAMEPLAY

GOOD DESIGN GOES
BEYOND GAMEPLAY

I rarely look at a design problem in isolation. A great idea needs to work as a player experience first, fit the realities of production and give people a reason to care about the game in the first place.

That means zooming in and out constantly: finding what makes an experience interesting, identifying what deserves the team’s attention first, and understanding which ideas actually carry the game. Sometimes the important question isn’t how to improve a mechanic, but whether it’s the right thing to build, test or communicate right now.

Over the years, this way of thinking has grown into frameworks and tools I use in my own work, mentoring and workshops. I care about making great games – but just as much about helping teams make smart decisions while making theirs.

WHERE I’M COMING FROM

My path into game design wasn’t entirely linear – and I’m glad it wasn’t. Next to game development, my background spans visual design, film, game studies, and cultural projects for museums, memorial sites and educational institutions.

It taught me to look at games from more than one perspective: as designed experiences, as collaborative projects and as something that has to work within very real creative, organizational and production constraints.

THINKING, TALKING & WRITING ABOUT GAMES

Beyond my project work, I regularly speak and write about game design, how games can be used meaningfully in education, and the realities of making games — sharing ideas, frameworks and lessons learned along the way.
